In December, leaders from the VFW Department of North Dakota were on hand for a special brunch to honor Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and his 28 years of service to his constituents. Conrad, who officially retired from the Senate on Jan. 3, 2013, was a long-time ally of the VFW, according to Department Legislative Chairman and Past State Commander John Hanson, who was by Grand Forks VFW Post 1874 Commander Norman Becker.
Hanson said that Conrad and his staff consistently asked for the VFW’s insight on veterans’ issues in the state and always invited the VFW to participate in field hearings and veterans’ issue roundtable discussions. Hanson also said that Conrad always welcomed VFW advocates when they visited is Senate office on Capitol Hill to push for improved veterans’ benefits.
The appreciation brunch was hosted by the BRAC Military Affairs Committee and the Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce. VFW Post 1874 is a member of both organizations.
